Ah - thanks for that Sepp - my German has got a little rusty. I\'m going to be doing a series of interviews and posts about Liquid Democracy, and was looking for a good speaker to interview in the Pirate Party. I know some of the developers, but not a good spokesperson for this in the German Pirate party.

I listened to the discussion. Did not find any direct reference to liquid democracy. It was a general discussion or rather exposition of positions of the Pirate party, of its programmatic goals, with questions and comments from representatives of other parties.

Those Pirate party goals include free local transport, a citizens income that is independent of whether you're rich or poor, school reforms to put more emphasis on computers, on teaching materials in electronic form and on a more loose organization of teaching.

Perhaps the concept of liquid democracy is implied in the fact that the Pirates have long term goals and that - going along - they propose to figure out how to best act to get closer to those goals.

In difference to other parties, the Pirates have a program of ideals to be reached, not necessarily of concrete steps to be taken right now.

Hi John, yes I agree that small hierarchies of groupings can promote deeper and better quality dialogue, but I think we can and do avoid some of the downside you mention (rigidity etc) using the organisational networks facilitated by social media.

These scale-free networks may (as pointed out by Zeynep), have stable topologies in which some nodes have a lot of influence (this is the sort of "hierarchy" many people think they want to avoid), but it may well be that these nodes are more fluid. New people may take their place, and moreover may do so based on the quality of their ideas, and not their physical location, or family connections.

I'd go so far as to say that there are many qualities of these scale-free networks, that are very desirable from a human, aesthetic, and moral point of view when compared to a purely flat structure. I'll try to get time to make another post on that topic!

There are doubtless downsides to scale-free networks in certain domains, that relate to this question of equality. For instance in economics, it is very much more clearly the case that great inequalities in the distributions of money and goods can lead to social unrest, and a degraded society. It is just that this lesson does not necessarily translate to the domain of using scale-free networks to elect representatives of policy based on nework reputation.
